Hi, my name is Jo*, and I never thought I’d end up in treatment.
For a long time, I believed treatment was for people worse off than me—people who had hit rock bottom in a way I told myself I hadn’t. I wasn’t living on the street. I wasn’t waking up in a hospital bed. I wasn’t… fill in the blank with whatever excuse I needed that day to keep avoiding help. I didn’t have the shakes. I wasn’t waking up with withdrawals (so I thought). But the truth was, I couldn’t stop doing the same things over and over again. And every time I completed another round of trying to will myself to have control over my drug of choice and failing, I felt more and more toxic inside.
Note: To someone who doesn’t have the disease, active addiction might look like someone being “lost” or struggling with emotional turmoil. The truth is, on the inside, active addiction feels like slowly being filled with battery acid, becoming more toxic and less recognizable each time you come to.
Somehow, overnight, I went from thinking I wasn’t bad enough, to thinking I was too far gone. I was so alien to myself that I couldn’t even imagine what having hope looked like. I simply wanted it to stop.
With some help, I reached out to a recovery center for an assessment and began treatment, ultimately landing in a PHP program in New Jersey. Again, I didn’t reach out because I had hope. I didn’t reach out because I believed in the message. I reached out because I was willing to see if there was anything left inside of me that was worth saving.
How PHP Helps Recovery Last
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is unique in that it prioritizes clinical programming and medical management while introducing just the right amount of independence. It’s recovery-focused with a side dose of real life.
This is so important because, as addicts, it’s so easy to go from one extreme to another. We’re either all in or all out. Moderation feels foreign, even painful. But a PHP allows us to live in that uncomfortable middle until it becomes comfortable.
- Clinical structure with flexibility: PHP provides therapy, medication management, and group support, but unlike inpatient treatment, you’re not completely cut off from the outside world. You start integrating real-life responsibilities while still having the safety net of treatment.
- Accountability without complete dependence: You learn how to make decisions and cope with triggers while still having professionals and peers to lean on. It’s a transition point between full-time care and being on your own.
- Real-world application: The lessons aren’t just theories; they’re immediately applied. You leave each day with tools and strategies you can use right away. The next morning, you check in and reflect on what worked and what didn’t.
The Balance That Saved Me
If I had gone straight from detox back into my old life, I wouldn’t have stood a chance. But I also know that if I had stayed in residential care too long, the idea of re-entering real life would have terrified me. PHP met me in the middle—it gave me the structure I needed but also the space to prove to myself that I could function without substances.
I learned how to sit with discomfort. To recognize that cravings, feelings, and urges weren’t emergencies that needed immediate relief. That I could survive them. That I could live through them.
If You’re Considering PHP…
I won’t tell you it’s easy. It’s not. Some days, I wanted to quit. Some days, I convinced myself I was being overdramatic and didn’t really need treatment. But I showed up anyway, and eventually… the treatment caught up to me.
PHP gave me the foundation to make recovery last. It forced me to practice balance before I had to do it alone.
If you’re considering PHP, my advice is simple: Stay. Give yourself the chance to feel better. To find hope. To rebuild.
Because if someone like me—someone who swore they didn’t need, or, better yet, deserve help—can find healing here, I promise you can too.
